“7 Deadly Sins,” created and hosted by Morgan Spurlock, is enough to make me physically sick. Well, at least the pilot turned my stomach. Each episode focuses on one of the deadly sins, and the pilot episode throws gluttony right in its viewers’ faces. It features the Heart Attack Grill, a woman over 700 pounds, and casket makers for the obese. The production values are high, and the presentation is purposely low.
It’s what the result would be if “Tales From the Crypt” were turned into a TV serial documentary. Spurlock is the crypt keeper who provides the intro, outro, and interludes. The subjects speak for themselves.
One of Spurlock’s previous TV shows, “30 Days,” was more effective at making an impactful statement. (He also created “Inside Man,” which airs on CNN, and several documentaries, including “Super Size Me.”) However, “7 Deadly Sins,” while off-putting, still makes its point.
Verdict: Somewhat Good
About: (Source: 7deadly)
Dark, twisted and wildly entertaining, 7 DEADLY SINS proves that truth really is stranger than fiction. Acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (SUPERSIZE ME) presents an outrageous, modern day interpretation of the seven deadly sins: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. Each episode presents a story around one of the sins that is so extreme you won’t believe it’s non-fiction. It’s humanity like you’ve never seen it, and you won’t be able to look away.
