REVIEW

“Man Seeking Woman” uses surreal or absurd humor to explore how a young man, Josh Greenberg (played by Jay Baruchel), rebounds from a breakup: He dates a troll (really), his ex-girlfriend dates Adolf Hitler (Really), and he ends up being the bad guy for not reacting in a supportive way (REALLY). …

And that’s just in the pilot. It’s not that he’s the only one who sees a troll or Hitler. No, he’s the only one who has a problem with it. For instance, Hitler’s age is 126, he’s in a wheelchair, and there are jokes that pertain to what he did to Jewish people. (Josh is Jewish, by the way.) But Josh’s friends blame him for having a problem with Hitler being the new boyfriend of his ex. Another example of this show’s humor is that when he successfully asks someone out, he receives an actual award and a limo ride.

Baruchel is the perfect actor to pull this off; he has an awkward believability that lends itself well to this character. While the humor won’t work for many, “Man Seeking Woman” is interesting – interesting enough to keep me watching … for now. It’s definitely unique, and I had a good time watching the first episode. The possibilities are endless for this show; that’s enough to warrant giving it a chance. …

Unfortunately, in subsequent episodes, “Man Seeking Woman” sticks with its jokes (or joke) too long. The first episode has two major comedic bits that are completely outlandish, but they work in an odd way. The next two episodes have comedic bits that outstay their welcome. By the end of the bit, the comedy’s extinguished.

I won’t be seeking this show anymore … again, unfortunately. I like the cast, though.

Verdict: OK Overall (Good First Episode)

About: (Source: manwoman)

A sweet and surreal look at the life-and-death stakes of dating, Man Seeking Woman follows naïve twenty-something “Josh Greenberg” (Jay Baruchel, How to Train Your Dragon) on his unrelenting quest for love. Josh soldiers through one-night stands, painful break-ups, a blind date with a troll, time travel, sex aliens, many deaths and a Japanese penis monster named “Tanaka” on his fantastical journey to find love.

Starring alongside Baruchel are Eric Andre (The Eric Andre Show) as “Mike,” Josh’s confident and daring best friend; Britt Lower (Unforgettable) as “Liz,” Josh’s intimidating older sister; and Maya Erskine (Betas) as “Maggie,” the ex-girlfriend Josh can never quite forget.

Man Seeking Woman is based on Simon Rich’s book of short stories, The Last Girlfriend on Earth. Rich created the 10-episode scripted comedy and also serves as Creator/Executive Producer. Jonathan Krisel, Andrew Singer and Lorne Michaels also serve as Executive Producers through Broadway Video. Man Seeking Woman is produced by FX Productions.
