“Almost Human” is enjoyable to watch. It would appeal to “Fringe” fans, but it’s not as complicated; well, not so far (after the first season). Regardless, its universe would fit into the universe (or universes) of “Fringe.”
Karl Urban and Michael Ealy have good chemistry and banter as partners (this show rests squarely on their shoulders), and the pacing and effects are good. Lili Taylor’s voice really works for me as their commanding officer (her voice is used during the show’s title scene, as well), and Minka Kelly is very appealing in her role as a detective with tech expertise. Mackenzie Crook is perfectly cast as a robot-technician for the force.
“Almost Human” is a show with a good idea, solid execution, and a fairly easy-to-follow sci-fi story line. It’s not too heavy or serious; there’s a light touch to it (lighter than that of “Fringe”). It feels both familiar and fresh at the same time.
Verdict: Good to Very Good
