The first episode of “Betas” is surprisingly promising. This is an underdog story, but the underdogs are app programmers in a world of it-geeks. So, there’s no traditional juxtaposition of geeks vs. jocks.

Now, there are story lines that are tangential to the main one that are much less interesting, but this is just the beginning. Hopefully, “Betas” will find its focus and heart through the humor as it develops.

The bottom line is this: I really want their app to succeed. That’s all that matters … for now. (That’s a hook, at least, which is what “Alpha House” lacks.)

Verdict: OK
