REVIEW

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has a surprisingly good pilot. I actually laughed. The secret sauce is Andre Braugher as the chief of the precinct referenced in the title. He plays the “straight” man to Andy Samberg’s jokester. Braugher provides a great brick wall for Samberg to slam into.

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is a modern comedy – there’s no laugh track, and it’s shot single-camera style – that puts a twist on the typical police-detective show. It has nice pacing and timing. Plus, the writing is professional and actually provides some laughs; it has a New York sense of humor. I hope they can keep this up. It’s not great (well, not yet), but it is fun to watch. Good job. …

Overall, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is a good show. It’s not funny enough to keep me watching on a consistent basis, though. The premise is a bit limiting in regards to providing new laughs. But it’s fine to watch every now and then, and you don’t need to watch it chronologically to get it.

Verdict: Good

About: (Source: brooklynnine)

Detective JAKE PERALTA (Samberg) is a good enough cop that he’s never had to work that hard or follow the rules too closely. Perhaps because he has the best arrest record among his colleagues, he’s been enabled – if not indulged – throughout his entire career. That is, until the precinct gets a new commanding officer, Captain RAY HOLT (Braugher), who reminds this hotshot cop to respect the badge.
