Think about New Yorkers. You know, the stereotypical ones. They’re rude and self-centered, right? They walk really fast and squawk instead of talk, right? They’re … abrasive. Well, if that’s your idea of New York (the city, that is), “Difficult People” won’t disabuse you of those notions.
In this series, Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner play characters with the same first names but different last names – you know the drill. They’re New York comedians who put the “j” in jaded. (Eichner, who’s probably best known as the titular host of Funny or Die’s “Billy on the Street,” isn’t as loud or as rushed in this show.) They’re annoying, but so are many of the other people they encounter. They say offensive things to and about those people. But none of it’s shocking. They’re simply snarky people with motormouths.
Since they talk so much, I actually find the moments when they’re not talking funnier. But they stop talking only rarely. The actors stick to a script for the most part, but they also sprinkle in a bit of improv. For the most part, “Difficult People” is close to being funny, though not quite. It’s not half-bad.
Verdict: OK to Somewhat Good
About: (Source: difficultpeople)
Difficult People hails from the comedic minds of Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner (Emmy-nominated Billy on the Street), who star as themselves. As best friends living in New York City, their typical, irreverent behavior lands them in some very awkward situations.
