With “Hemlock Grove,” Netflix ventures into the supernatural. This series was developed by Brian McGreevy (the author of the novel upon which it is based) and Lee Shipman; Eli Roth (director of the “Hostel” films) serves as its executive producer.
“Hemlock Grove” relies on traditional horror techniques, including a blend of humor, frights, and wooded areas. The problem is that the writing doesn’t work (there’s a mess of ideas here). Plus, the pacing’s off … oh, and almost all of the acting is bad.
This is a show that’s aware of itself, but that awareness doesn’t excuse how bad it is. Instead of coming across as being bad on purpose, it comes across as amateurish. It looks great, though.
The pilot is more than enough viewing for me. I’ll stick with “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black,” instead.
How did they get Lili Taylor to agree to this?
Verdict: Bad
