“Mozart in the Jungle” is a half-hour comedy series set in the world of orchestral conductors (old and new), musicians (old and new), and management. The excess of egos and idiosyncrasies provide fertile ground, and the contemporary setting helps to keep things light.
In the first episode, all of the humor doesn’t work, but the writers and actors are game. While there are some sharply executed moments, it’s a bit inconsistent overall. That’s not uncommon at the very beginning of a new show, though.
Regardless, the first episode of “Mozart in the Jungle” shows a lot of promise. I get the sense that this show will turn into something; it’s diverting and transporting without being a fantasy. It will appeal to fans of backstage stories who want more than just another drama. …
“Mozart in the Jungle,” as a whole, is represented very well by its first episode. And just wait until Wallace Shawn shows up in the eighth episode of the first season. Now that man understands musicality! That’s what I’m talking about! And this is the right show in which to showcase it.
Verdict: Very (Yet Imperfectly) Good

What happens behind the curtains at the symphony is just as captivating as what happens on stage. Created by Paul Weitz (About a Boy), Roman Coppola (The Darjeeling Limited), and Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore). Brash new maestro Rodrigo (Gael Garcia Bernal) is stirring things up, and young oboist Hailey (Lola Kirke) hopes for her big chance.
