“Southland,” created by Ann Biderman, is my all-time favorite cop show … so far. It has character development, spot-on performances, great writing, authenticity, and just enough realism. The hand-held camerawork makes perfect sense for this kind of show; it makes you feel like you’re right there with the characters as they chase the bad guys, among other things. The pacing is flawless. In addition, by starting each episode at the end of its story line and then by flashing back to the beginning of that story line, “Southland” distinguishes itself from other shows in this genre.
Just check-out the performances; these people seem like real cops. Michael Cudlitz and Regina King, especially, lead an ensemble that never has a false moment. Other notable ensemble members are Shawn Hatosy and Benjamin Mackenzie. Along with Cudlitz and King, they form the rock-solid core of the cast. Again, they’re all excellent. C. Thomas Howell also deserves to be mentioned for his portrayal of a crazy, alcoholic cop.
Even in its more outrageous moments, “Southland” handles things as a cop would: Just get the job done, and come out alive. I’m going to miss it.
Verdict: Great
