“The Red Road” is another original TV series entry by Sundance into the slow-burn series movement. “Rectify,” a really good original series, and “Top of the Lake,” a decent miniseries, were their previous entries into that genre.
Martin Henderson stars as a police officer whose wife, played by Julianne Nicholson, hits and kills a Native American boy. At the time, she was frantically looking for their daughter, who’s dating another Native American boy. To keep the accident quiet, the officer strikes a deal with an unsavory Native American man, played by Jason Momoa, whose brother is dating the daughter and whose mother, played by Tamara Tunie, was visited by the frantic wife.
There’s going to be a lot of intrigue and schemes on the horizon for this show, but I won’t be there to see it. I watch and have watched enough of these slow-tempo shows (e.g., “Rubicon,” “True Detective,” “The Killing,” the aforementioned “Rectify,” “Broadchurch,” and “The Bridge,” which I stopped watching after a few episodes) to know when this kind of show is not going to be worth the investment.
“The Red Road” certainly isn’t bad, but it doesn’t offer anything that I think will turn into something worth the huge time investment that it will require. It’s just not interesting enough to warrant sticking around.
Verdict: OK
