REVIEW

“Weeds” is a fairly entertaining TV dramedy created by Jenji Kohan (who also created “Orange is the New Black”). It’s the natural precursor to “Shameless” for the network. But, unlike “Shameless,” each episode is 30 minutes long.

Mary-Louise Parker is perfectly cast as the lead. And the cast also includes Elizabeth Perkins, Kevin Nealon, Justin Kirk, and Romany Malco, among others. So, it’s pretty solid.

“Weeds” makes fun of suburbia and the marijuana drug business. The suppliers of the weed are black, so their portrayal may offend some … but that’s the point, and their scene in the pilot is probably its most entertaining moment. (Just sayin’.) Toward the end of the pilot, this show seems to lose some steam, but we’ll see whether the writers will have enough ideas to keep things interesting as it progresses. …

After the second episode, I have a higher opinion of “Weeds,” because things have settled down a bit. This episode has a steadier presentation. Something similar happened to another Showtime series, “United States of Tara.” I’m actually interested now. Thank you.

Verdict: Good

About: (Source: weeds)

Pot-selling single mom turned danger junkie Nancy Botwin has been dodging disaster since day one, but she’s always had a special talent for manipulating her friends, her family, and even the law to her advantage. And the more desperate things become, the more she’s ready and willing to take desperate measures, no matter who she’ll have to take with her. Emmy® and Golden Globe® winner Mary-Louise Parker stars in the addictively outrageous comedy hit series WEEDS.
