Urbanworld Film Festival, one of the largest competitive film festivals designed to advance the presence and impact of diverse content creators, will screen over 68 films and takes place September 21-25, 2016 at Manhattan’s AMC Empire 25 on 234 West 42nd Street. The first time we went to this festival, we attended a panel discussion with Ava, David, and other “Selma” cast members.

This year, critically acclaimed filmmaker Ava DuVernay and one of Hollywood’s most sought after actors, David Oyelowo, will serve as the ambassadors for Urbanworld Film Festival’s 20th anniversary.

Ava is “honored to be one of this year’s Urbanworld ambassadors for the festival’s 20th anniversary, joining my friend David Oyelowo and [has] always had a special relationship with Urbanworld.”

David has fond memories of Urbanworld, as well: “Urbanworld is the first place Ava and I screened footage of ‘Selma’ two years ago. The loving reception we received for our film there makes this opportunity to be ambassadors of this wonderful festival in its 20th year feel like both an honor and a homecoming.”

In addition to being an ambassador, Oyelowo also stars in Disney’s “Queen of Katwe,” which will be featured on Thursday, September 22 at 7:45 p.m. at the festival. The film is based on the vibrant true story of a young girl from the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. Directed by Mira Nair, the film stars Golden Globe® nominee David Oyelowo, Tony® nominee and Academy Award® winner Lupita Nyong’o and newcomer Madina Nalwanga.
