REVIEW

“The Last Man on Earth” stars Will Forte in the title role. You can take that literally. It starts in the year 2020, one year after “The Virus.” It then moves into 2021. Along the way, Forte’s Phil Miller tours the country in a bus, saying “Hello” through a megaphone, to make sure that he’s alone. He receives no response.

We then see Miller go through what many other guys would go through in this situation: masturbation (there are no women), appeals to God, figuring out what to use as a toilet, raids on a grocery store, watching “Cast Away” (he says that he won’t ever talk to a ball, but then he does, of course), and so on.

After all of that, guess what happens? (Keep in mind that the title references the last man on Earth.) The ensuing encounter works pretty well. Let’s just say that he doesn’t meet the woman of his dreams.

The first episode of “The Last Man on Earth” provides a nice departure from other outbreak films and TV shows. It has an aimless sense of humor that works – for now. How long will that last? I’m sure that they have a lot of ideas up their sleeves – they better. …

And they do. The more you watch “The Last Man on Earth,” the more you expect that anything can happen. (I’m not going to give anything away.) The very end of the first season certainly highlights that. So, I look forward to the next season of this show. Whether I’m laughing or not, I’m always interested.

Verdict: Good
