“Nurse Jackie” is a good show that has some really great moments. But, as it enters its sixth season, it has lost some steam. It feels weighed-down at this point. It used to feel a bit lighter even as its central character (played expertly, of course, by Edie Falco) juggles her drug habit, work life, and unfaithful relationship with her husband. That lightness is important to this show, because it keeps things moving and provides an important counterpoint to all of the problems bubbling beneath the surface.
It’s not a bad show, right now; it’s still good. It’s just that it used to be really good. This change in tone may be due to the departure of one of the showrunners (and co-creator), Liz Brixius.
But the supporting cast is still pretty strong, especially Merritt Wever. Both Falco and Wever have won Emmys for their portrayals.
Perhaps, they’ve just run out of story lines. Regardless, I’ll likely continue to watch “Nurse Jackie,” even if it continues to meander a bit; but, all the while, I’ll hope that they find their way back to something with more of a spark. …
The seventh and final season of “Nurse Jackie” is a reminder of what this show is at its best: a show that teeters on the edge. It teeters on the edge of comedy and drama, as its main character teeters on the edge of sobriety. That’s what makes it interesting to watch. I’m so glad that “Nurse Jackie” ends on a high note. Plus, the addition of Tony Shalhoub to this season’s cast was an excellent decision.
Verdict: Good to Very Good
About: (Source: nursejackie)
Edie Falco stars in her Emmy® winning role as NURSE JACKIE, a skilled nurse with a nasty drug habit. She lies, she cheats, she steals, she hurts, she bamboozles friends, fools family, pops pills and breaks hearts. But you still root for her because on the worst day of your life, hers is the only face you want to see. With an addict’s survival skills and an attitude that just won’t quit, she’ll do whatever it takes to hold onto the things that truly matter to her — her friends, her family and her job.
