“Survivor’s Remorse” (executive produced by Lebron James) is a well-paced TV comedy that has clunky writing and even clunkier transitions. Based on the first two episodes (out of a total of six for the first season), there’s not a lot of comedy here. The characters are pretty likable, though. However, Jessie T. Usher, as lead character Cam Calloway, needs to take some acting lessons. He plays the lead role like he’s in a mediocre community theatre production. He needs to pull back a bit, relax into the role a little more.
In contrast, his supporting cast is solid. Mike Epps, as Cam’s uncle, needs more screen time and less of a leash. Tichina Arnold, as Cam’s mother, does what she does. RonReaco Lee as Reggie, Cam’s cousin and manager, and Teyonah Parris as Reggie’s wife are professional and have an ease with their lines, which aren’t always the most fluid. Erica Ash brings a lot of sass, at times too much, to her role as Cam’s lesbian older sister.
So, overall, “Survivor’s Remorse” isn’t a bad show. It just seems like it’s waiting to be funny, instead of actually accomplishing it. There is a light sweetness to a lot of the moments on display that isn’t unwelcome, even as the show delves into adult topics, but “Survivor’s Remorse” should stay far away from any hints of drama or the ‘hood. I think that they should trust the supporting cast a little more, and let them take the reins. This show could find its funny bone, as a result. If it does, it’ll be worth a watch. If it doesn’t, it’ll be worth a shrug. I’m shrugging already.
Verdict: OK
About: (Source: remorse)
“Survivor’s Remorse,” a six-episode half hour comedy series, follows Cam Calloway played by Jessie T. Usher (“Level Up”), a basketball phenom in his early 20’s who is suddenly thrust into the limelight after signing a multi-million dollar contract with a professional basketball team in Atlanta. Cam, along with his cousin, and confidant Reggie Vaughn played by Ronreaco Lee (Glory, “Let’s Stay Together”) move to Georgia to start Cam’s journey to success. The two confront the challenges of carrying opportunistic family members and their strong ties to the impoverished community that they come from. Cam, Reggie, and an unforgettable group of characters wrestle with the rewards and pitfalls of stardom, love, and loyalty.
